Put a smile on that dial

Did you know that today is World Smile Day?

What a fantastic idea. We celebrate or acknowledge so many things, so why not have a day in honour of the simple smile.

The list is endless but these are my top 10 reasons why we should smile more.

A smile is contagious: It’s true. A recent study in Sweden showed that people found it difficult to frown when they looked at other people who were smiling. They just could not control their muscles and soon they were smiling too!

It’s easier to smile than frown: Yep, it’s true. It takes more muscles to frown than smile. And anything that requires less effort but produces big rewards has to be a good thing in my book.

A smile can relieve stress and boost your immune system: When you smile your body releases those feel-good things called endorphins. These natural “happy pills” contribute to relaxation as well as lower blood pressure and stronger immunity.

Making yourself smile can boost your mind: Psychologists say that even if you’re in a bad mood, you can lift your spirits with the simple act of putting a smile on that dial.

A smile is your first facial expression: It might not mean anything until we’re much older, but babies start smiling in the womb. So while babies learn a lot of their behaviours from the people around them, they are born with the ability to smile.

A smile is a form of exercise: It takes anything from 5 to 53 muscles to smile – so go on, work out your face!

A smile is a universal sign of happiness: A hug or handshake has different meanings in different cultures. But a smile in all cultures is a sign of happiness. All people – even some animals – recognise a smile and what it means.

A smile is more attractive than makeup: A study conducted by Orbit Complete found that 69% of people find women more attractive when they smile than when they are wearing makeup.

A smile can be detected from far away: People can recognize smiles from more than 90m away, making it the most easily recognisable facial expression.

A smile can help you get that promotion you’re after: Smiles make a person seem more attractive, sociable and confident, and people who smile more are more likely to get a promotion.
