Lupa-liscious!

Lupa has established itself in the Hillcrest and Westville areas, with restaurants that offer authentic Italian cuisine in a friendly, family setting. But for us ‘coastliners’, it’s definitely a bit of a schlep getting up that hill – especially if you want to partake of the delicious cocktails and wines on offer.

So I was very happy to hear that a new branch had opened recently in Durban North. Twice we thought we’d get a walk-in booking, twice we were disappointed. But this weekend, we were fortunate to get in between the lunch and supper rush.

Now, I’m not a lover of pasta, though I do love a good pizza and focaccia. But I was simply intrigued by how busy this new venue was.

With a fully stocked bar and extensive wine list, you are spoilt for choice. But my eye went straight to the Cocktail section that had interesting variations to classic cocktails. I just loved the Lemon Caiprinhia – so much so I had two!

The caramelised onion & feta focaccia is an excellent start to your meal – in fact I have my eye on at least two other focaccia starters for my next visit.

For mains I chose a pasta. I never choose pasta. But I just had to see what all the fuss was about. Now I know. My husband tells me that in the 15 years we’ve been married, this is only the third time I’ve wiped my plate clean! I took a photo of my empty plate and posted it on Instagram immediately after my meal. Never have I had so many likes and comments!

The Kristen pizza (fillet steak, avo and feta) that my husband ordered was also excellent.

For dessert we chose the salted caramel popcorn sundae – a hands down winner in my book – and the chocolate budino.

You know a restaurant is worth writing about when a friendly and attentive waitron notices that we were just not into the budino and returns a few minutes later to say she figured we did not like it, so her manager suggested we choose another dessert at no charge. Now that is attention to detail! That is real service. So, créme brûlée it was – again we wiped the ramekin clean!

From fantastic service, to a great ambience, to cocktails to die for and truly delicious food – it really was a fabulous afternoon/evening out. I can’t wait to go back!
