Heard of a “smashburger”?
Then you haven’t been to Durban’s hottest new hamburger joint – and boy are you missing out.
Rocomama’s recently opened in Mackeurtan Avenue in Durban North.
It was its crazy signage and quirky décor that first attracted us to the venue. From VW Beetle headlamps as lighting, to a bathroom that just begged to be photographed and the great tiled wall – a lot of thought has gone into every detail of the look of this establishment.
The gimmicky menu was a huge hit with the kids too – you get a sheet of paper and pen and tick off your order, add your name (for a personalised experience) and hand it in to the waitron.
Taking its cue from American fast food staples, Rocomamas offers its famous smashburgers, ribs and wings made in some novel ways. And there is a reason the burger is called a smashburger – it’s all about the way the pattie is “smashed” onto the griddle as you watch the cooks whip up your meal.
From the classic cheese burger, to “Old Skool” to a crazy combination of bacon, cheese and guacamole – there is a burger that has your name on it. And if there isn’t then you can just create your own.
Wings and ribs work on the same principle. Old Skool BBQ, peri peri, UncleJackBourbon, teriyaki – the flavours are quirky and different.
A side order of fries are ordered separately. Be warned – these are American portion sizes, so a single medium serving was more than enough for our family of four.
While the boys opted for burgers, I chose the peri peri ribs and was not disappointed.
But I have to say, it was a heck of a lot of red meat on my board and I was glad I could take my unfinished portion home.
Rocomamas was born in Johannesburg and there are a number of outlets in Gauteng. The Durban North branch is the first in KZN but there are plans for more. Judging by how packed this restaurant has been since it opened, Durban loves the concept, the food and the ambience. More of the like would obviously be welcomed.[contact-form-7 404 "Not Found"]
