Why I’m glad I was forced to watch ‘Wonder Woman’

Why I’m glad I was forced to watch ‘Wonder Woman’ Kiki is “my person”. It's a term that originated from one of my favourite television series, Grey’s Anatomy. “My person” is the one I go to for just about everything. She's the one I can't stay mad at and the one who supports me even when I refuse to say sorry. Being someone’s “person” is a commitment. I’ve started my blog with this explanation to contextualise why I capitulated – despite my every nerve railing against it – to watch Wonder Woman with Kiki as part of her birthday celebration. Come on, play your part this Earth Hour

Come on, play your part this Earth Hour Here is a call to action worth considering. Earth Hour is a global call to protect the planet and to stand up against climate change. Having started in Australia in 2007, the event has since grown in leaps and bounds. South Africans began observing the hour from 2009, ahead of climate change talks in Copenhagen. (more…)

An exercise in introspection

An exercise in introspection

An exercise in introspection Hello everyone. I’ve been caught in the hamster wheel of life – school runs, extra mural activities with the kids and coursework recently – with very little time for myself. Today, I’m stepping back and breathing. Today, I’m indulging in a bit of introspection. (more…)

Holidaying in Zanzibar on a whim and fancy – Part 3

Holidaying in Zanzibar on a whim and fancy – Part 3 If you’ve been following my posts, you’ll know that I decided to live outside of my comfort zone this holiday and travel without doing much planning. Our only requirements when we booked was that our hotel be on the beach and relatively quiet. We wanted a space away from the tourist hustle and bustle, a space that was tranquil, healing and comfortable. A space that we would enjoy spending most of our holiday at. (more…)

Holidaying in Zanzibar on a whim and fancy – Part 2 If you read my last post (Holidaying in Zanzibar on a whim and fancy – Part 1), you will know I recently visited this island off the mainland of Tanzania. Armed with very little info on what to expect on my holiday, I was completely out of my comfort zone as I negotiated a foreign country, people and customs. (more…)

Circle of life

Circle of life

Lifestyle
Circle of life Living on the east coast, I've grown accustomed to the beauty of a sunrise over the sea. That time of day - when the sun, sky and sea engage in a game of tag, showing off as they throw out a myriad dazzling colours for our eyes to feast on - is when I feel a deep sense of peace and spirituality. This year I got to experience a number of sunsets over the sea. After long, hot, hazy days, the soothing sight of calm seas and a setting sun is a calming experience. It's a circle-of-life kind of moment - bringing me back to the beginning, encouraging me to start again, assuring me that to move forward is not about forgetting but rather about accepting.

On rebellion and healing: my journey

On rebellion and healing: my journey

On rebellion and healing: my journey In a time of uncertainty, I often descend into quiet and solitude. It’s a defense mechanism on some level. Solitude is also a space to heal and dig deep for answers. This holiday has seen me doing a great deal of introspection and healing. I have never experienced so many changes in such a short time as the last 10 weeks have thrown at me. Tuesday thoughts: rebuilding shelf by shelf

Tuesday thoughts: rebuilding shelf by shelf

Lifestyle
Tuesday thoughts: rebuilding shelf by shelf The last two months have been a roller coaster of emotions and change in my life - some good and some bad. The death of my mum, a massive career changing decision, allowing our young children to travel overseas without us and general end-of-year burnout seemed more than I could handle at times. I was a ball of nerves and emotions.
