Inner city reality

I live in Durban and will probably do so as long as I have young children to raise. But the city of “Jozi” holds a special place in my heart. It is undoubtedly my favourite city in South Africa. And as I paged through A City Refracted, I realised once again why I love Johannesburg so much. (more…)

Banff Mountain Film Fest heads back to Durban

Banff Mountain Film Fest heads back to Durban

Durban
Last year I was invited to the first Banff Film Festival held at Ster Kinekor in Gateway. Not knowing what to expect, I was glad for the popcorn and refreshments to keep me busy - just in case I got bored. Well, amazed, awed, and exhilarated – I walked out of the cinema with stars in my eyes and wondering if I would have the guts to perform some of the feats I witnessed. In its 10th year of screening in South Africa, and second in Durban, The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is brought to SA by Cape Union Mart and is screened at Ster Kinekor cinemas in Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria. #BUYABOOK for National Book Week

Books
It’s National Book Week (NBW). Launched by the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture Rejoice Mabudafhasi in Johannesburg last week, NBW runs from September 7-13. A 2007 study highlighted a sad reality in our country – that only 14% of South Africans read books and half the country doesn’t own even one leisure book in their home. It cannot be disputed that at the heart of personal growth, community development and a thriving nation is reading and literacy. The study also found that having as few as 20 books in the home is proven to have a significant impact in propelling a child to higher levels of education. (more…)

I got goodies!

I got goodies!

Durban, Lifestyle
We took a drive to the Hillcrest Country Market on a whim today. It was a small market that we got through quite quickly. But I left laden with delightful goodies and already have my eye out for the next one. I just tucked into the most sublime baked cheesecake from BizziB Gourmet Foods after a luxurious exfoliation with pure coconut oil and brown sugar. These are just two of the fantastic finds we made at the market. From muscle rubs to trendy beads and baubles, from premixed curry sachets for the cook on the go to Banting-friendly delights from BizziB Gourmet Goodies, you're sure to find a treasure or two at the Hillcrest Country Market. It's open on Sundays from 9am to 1pm. Give it a try. [contact-form][contact-field label='Name'…
