This week, Mattel announced that Barbie has been given a makeover \u2013 the doll will now be available in three new body types – tall, petite and curvy.<\/p>\n

So, the 56-year-old stereotypical, disproportionately long-legged, blonde and blue-eyed \u201cbombshell\u201d is getting more real.<\/p>\n

The new dolls will now feature four body types. Purchasers will also be able to choose from 7 skin tones, 22 eye colours and 24 hairstyles.<\/p>\n

According to Evelyn Mazzocco, senior vice president and global general manager of the Barbie brand, Mattel believes \u201cwe have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty\u201d.<\/p>\n

Way to go Mattel \u2013 it\u2019s taken you over half a century to acknowledge that women come in an array of colours, shapes and sizes. The introduction of a black Barbie in 1980 was simply not sufficient.<\/p>\n

No doubt this makeover is linked directly to declining sales of the doll \u2013 fewer parents and children are getting sucked into the stereotype they\u2019re being sold.<\/p>\n

Mattel’s always defended its choice not to change Barbie’s body size and has drawn a lot of criticism over the years.<\/p>\n

But, after the new Barbie body types were announced this week, social media lit up with posts praising the move.<\/p>\n

While, I\u2019m not rushing out to buy my daughter a new-look Barbie (thankfully she can\u2019t stand dolls in general), I would be interested to see if these new dolls are a success.<\/p>\n
