Review: Rain\u2019<\/span>s Kigelia clay mask is a great addition to my skincare routine<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Nothing gets me more excited than quality brands made and sourced in Africa. <\/span>I\u2019ve written extensively about the Rain products and stores in Durban and I am excited for the opportunity to test out the latest product in their Biologie range – the Kigelia Honeybush Clay Mask.<\/span><\/p>\n

A key ingredient found in the Kigelia Honeybush Clay Mask is kigelia extract.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Kigelia<\/span><\/h3>\n

Many of us are feeling the effects of a fast lifestyle, pollution, a harsher sun and more on our skins. We expose our skins to more and more harmful elements every day. And this is why I believe it is important to turn back to natural goodness. It is part of my journey into the slow movement<\/a> and supporting and buying loca<\/a>l. It is part of my decision to live as sustainably as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like all Rain products, a key ingredient in the kigelia mask is an extract from the fruit of an indigenous African plant – the Kigelia tree (or sausage tree as it is more commonly known). Indigenous plants have been used by African healers for centuries and they are the heart of all Rain products.<\/span><\/p>\n

In true Rain style, the plant is sustainably harvested locally. It is blended with natural ingredients to create a hardworking clay mask that is meant to extract impurities and deep cleanse your skin. The Rain philosophy is to use all-natural ingredients that do not harm the environment or your skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Biologie range<\/span><\/h3>\n

Rain\u2019s Biologie range is one of my all-time favourites. I love their mustard bath and foot products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Biologie is a multitasking range, formulated to protect skin from sun damage and addresses skin concerns like ageing as well as skin tone and texture. It is eco-ethical, formulated using organically certified botanical ingredients and sustainably wild-harvested plant oils and extracts from indigenous African plants.<\/span><\/p>\n

A key ingredient found in the Kigelia Honeybush Clay Mask is honeybush extract.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The key ingredients in these products include mongongo nuts, marula fruit, Kalahari melon and baobab oil. They have high concentrations of antioxidants, vitamins, and omega fatty acids \u2014 all crucial in nourishing and protecting your skin against free radicals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Biologie products are also biodegradable and environment-friendly. It\u2019s no wonder Rain refers to this range as \u201cSpa with a Soul\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mask<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Kigelia Clay Mask is a dark brown, grainy paste made up of 94% of natural or naturally-derived ingredients. It\u2019s not very pretty and its scent doesn\u2019t bowl you over. The mask is used on the face and\/or body and spreads smoothly and evenly with the fingers.<\/span><\/p>\n

It has a pleasant lavender scent, which helped me relax as I lay back for the 20 minutes required for the actives to work their magic.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve used the mask on my face once a week for three weeks. And I did try it on my arms as well. We were in the mountains over the long weekend and as is the case with any trip to the Drakensberg, we spent a lot of time outdoors and walking to streams or waterfalls. <\/span><\/p>\n

Skin repair<\/span><\/h3>\n

Needless to say, the sudden drop in temperature, as well as the harsher sun, played havoc with my extremely sensitive skin. I returned home with red arms from sun exposure as well as redness and tightness on my cheekbones.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019d used the mask twice before my trip and enjoyed how my skin felt. But, it was after using the kigelia mask to treat my damaged skin that I truly appreciated its value. I spread the mask on my arms and face and sat back in my bathtub praying the redness would at least dissipate. As I ran the lukewarm water over my arms they were indeed less tender and red. And they looked and felt more hydrated. <\/span><\/p>\n

The tightness around my cheeks was still there, but I could feel that my skin was clean and fresh. After a generous dose of hydrating cream and a good night\u2019s sleep, I woke the next day to find my face less red and definitely not so tight.<\/span><\/p>\n

As with any product, this mask is not a miracle worker on its own. Good skin is dependent on a good skincare routine. Cleanse well and moisturise accordingly \u2014 I live by that. My skin was dehydrated and slightly sunburnt when I returned from the mountains. So, I used my mask in conjunction with other products to address the problem. The kigelia mask helped soothe and prepare my skin so that it could absorb the moisture I was feeding it.<\/span><\/p>\n

A key ingredient found in the Kigelia Honeybush Clay Mask is marula oil.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Being a clay mask, it could have caused my skin to dehydrate further. And I was wary of this because many clay masks have caused me more problems than benefits in the past. But my damaged skin did need the detoxifying benefit of the kigelia extract and red Kalahari clay. <\/span><\/p>\n

This mask also contains various oils \u2014 Kalahari melon, baobab, and marula \u2014 and they helped prevent excessive dehydration. They also added some much-needed moisture and nourishment back into my skin<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kigelia Honeybush Clay Mask is essentially an anti-oxidant, detoxifying and purifying mask. But if used correctly it can nourish, restore and add elasticity to your skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

A key ingredient found in the Kigelia Honeybush Clay Mask is pomegranate extracts.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

I enjoyed giving this product a try. I\u2019m usually wary of trying out new products because my skin rejects change like a demon. But this time my skin welcomed the change. I am glad that it didn\u2019t add to the constant skin dehydration that I battle with.<\/span><\/p>\n

It gently exfoliates and without being abrasive and doesn\u2019t leave a microplastic<\/a> footprint in the environment. <\/span><\/p>\n
