It\u2019s Women\u2019s Month in South Africa. Just over a week ago we observed Women\u2019s Day. While marketing boffs made the most of the opportunity, this day holds a deeper meaning for South Africans, women in particular. Women\u2019s Day is inextricably linked with our shameful apartheid past. It is linked with the stand taken by thousands of women against the dehumanising laws of a despotic state. Some half a century later, with apartheid abolished, a sad realisation dawned on me this week \u2026 so much has changed, yet so much stays the same.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2497\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2497\" class=\"wp-image-2497 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/justmeneesha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0894-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"JustMeneesha, Meneesha Govender, Women's Day, Apartheid, women\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justmeneesha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0894.jpg 700w, https:\/\/justmeneesha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0894-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Women\u2019s Day is inextricably linked with our shameful apartheid past. On August 9, 1956, more than 20 000 women marched to the Union buildings demanding the end to Pass Laws.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this week alone I\u2019ve watched a young woman have her confidence shaken to its core publicly by another woman old enough to be her mum. I\u2019ve seen men throw shocking labels freely and publicly at female colleagues in a professional setting. And I\u2019ve been accused of being part of a weird gender club <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a reference to the fact that women outnumber men in a committee. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Women and ceilings<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has this got to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/justmeneesha.com\/index.php\/2018\/07\/03\/what-the-freelance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freelancing<\/a> you may wonder \u2026 Not much really. Except that one of the reasons I opted to be my own boss was I knew I had hit the glass ceiling in the corporate world. I knew that as a woman my fate was sealed. Freelancing was my chance to break free of the constraints and test my limits <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> push the boundaries. And I am realising that for female freelancers there are new glass ceilings to negotiate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve realised this week that every woman I\u2019ve witnessed being attacked is a strong, independent entrepreneur who is shaking up the hegemony. Their strength and integrity shine a spotlight on insipid privilege. Their voices call out the misogynists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I see you. I hear you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today my post is a salute to these women. It\u2019s acknowledgment.
