#SundayRead: Vox<\/span><\/h1>\n

I read The Handmaid’s Tale<\/em> when it was first published. It\u2019s one of those novels that stayed with me all these years later. Vox<\/em> will be the same.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the last month, I\u2019ve received two books with similar themes. In fact, Elle<\/em> magazine says this novel is a \u201cpetrifying re-imagining of The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> in the present\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

As its title suggests, this novel is about the voice and speaking (out).<\/span><\/p>\n

Jean McClellan\u2019s life has changed now that a new government has taken over. The lives of every woman have changed actually. Women\u2019s bank accounts have been frozen, their passports revoked and women cannot have jobs. Young girls are not allowed to read or write.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"JustMeneesha,<\/span><\/p>\n

Jean now lives in almost complete silence <\/span>\u2013<\/span> 100 words a day, to be precise. <\/span><\/p>\n

If she goes over her quota, she risks 1 000 volts of electricity coursing through her veins.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Jean will reclaim her voice <\/span>\u2013<\/span> for herself, her daughter and the many other women like her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vox<\/em> is disturbing, yet unforgettable. It is indeed petrifying. <\/span><\/p>\n
