#FreelanceFriday: ruminating on my choices<\/span><\/h1>\n

We make choices every day of our lives. And they begin the minute we open our eyes to the world we have been born into.<\/span><\/p>\n

Making a choice is a simple act. It\u2019s something we don\u2019t often think about \u2013 it happens as easily as brushing our teeth in the mornings. Yet choice impacts on our lives in every way. <\/span><\/p>\n

We choose our friends. We choose to eschew certain foods. We choose to be nice. We choose to be mean. And while we cannot choose our family, we can choose who in our family we have time for.<\/span><\/p>\n

Becoming a freelancer was something I chose. Yes, life events, emotions and financial circumstances shaped my choice. But in the end,\u00a0I chose to go down this path.<\/span><\/p>\n

Questioning<\/span><\/h3>\n

Questioning my choices is a healthy part of the process. It means I am actively engaging with my decision. It means I am interrogating where I am and what I am doing. I am constantly asking myself if this is going to lead me to my goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve learnt that sometimes a choice I made may need to be reconsidered. The decision may need a simple repositioning or retweak. Or an entirely new choice may be required. And that too is my prerogative.<\/span><\/p>\n

My choices will determine how successful I am. Staying up late to meet a deadline is a choice. I do it because I know meeting that deadline could mean more work from that client. Taking on a client I don\u2019t really want is a choice. I do that because, in an economy that is in a damaging recession, I just won\u2019t turn away work on a whim. Even eating lunch at my desk is a choice. I do that because I can\u2019t be bothered walking down to the kitchen. <\/span><\/p>\n

Power<\/h3>\n

Choice is a powerful concept both personally and professionally. It is the cornerstone of life. Yet, often we take our choices for granted and the result can be devastating. We lash out without thinking about the consequences. We allow ourselves to be abused because we feel a sense of loyalty or because we want to protect an idea or person or organisation. We enjoy a moment without truly appreciating the hand we played in bringing joy to our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

My advice today is to choose carefully. Choose wisely. And never forget that your choices can be interrogated and adjusted or even abandoned.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abandoning a choice is as powerful an act as making that choice in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choice is the most powerful tool we have. Everything boils down to choice. We exist in a field of infinite possibilities. Every choice we make shuts an infinite number of doors and opens an infinite number of doors. At any point we can change the direction of our lives by a simple choice.
