For years, the conversation around first-language bias has focused \u2013 rightly \u2013 on the harm it causes teachers and learners who use English as an additional language. It sidelines qualified professionals, devalues hard-won expertise, and sends learners the damaging message that an accent or a passport is a proxy for quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there\u2019s another side to this conversation we rarely have. What does first-language bias do to first-language speakers themselves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been sitting with this question for a while, and the more I think about it, the more I believe this bias quietly undermines native speakers, too \u2013 not by excluding them, but by letting them off the hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem with \u2018Congratulations, you qualify\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When being a first-language speaker functions as a credential, it sends a very specific message: you already have what it takes. You don\u2019t need to study pedagogy. You don\u2019t need to develop intercultural awareness, or learn how confidence actually grows when you speak in an additional language. You don\u2019t need to understand why a capable adult freezes, avoids speaking, or spirals into self-doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You just need to show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And some do, without having done any of that work. Not because they\u2019re lazy or careless \u2013 but because the system never asked them to. First-language bias doesn\u2019t just disadvantage teachers from other backgrounds; it also fails to challenge first-language speakers to become the best teachers they can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When \u2018native\u2019 isn\u2019t native enough<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the thing: even first-language speakers aren\u2019t always safe from this bias. I once worked in a newsroom where a cabal of sub-editors judged, belittled, and terrified not just colleagues who spoke English as a second language, but even those who spoke it as a first. Why? Because they believed there was only one standard: the Queen\u2019s English. A South African style \u2013 my style \u2013 was frowned upon. We were \u201cnative\u201d speakers, but we weren\u2019t the right kind of native speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That experience taught me something important. First-language bias isn\u2019t really about language at all. It\u2019s about power. It\u2019s about who gets to decide what\u2019s correct, who belongs, and who doesn\u2019t. And when that power goes unchecked, it doesn\u2019t just exclude people from other countries \u2013 it fractures communities, pits first-language speakers against each other, and reinforces a narrow, outdated idea of who can be taken seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
