In 2009 Nelson Mandela International Day was launched by the UN in recognition of Madiba’s birthday on July 18.
Mandela day is more than a celebration of this world icon’s life. It calls on people around the world to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
According to the Mandela Day website, Madiba followed 3 rules throughout his life:
- Free yourself
- Free others
- Serve every day
Mandela Day is a global call to action for people to follow in Tata’s footsteps. Offering up 67 minutes, rands or even goods, on July 18 is not a big ask. The Nelson Mandela Foundation believes that no matter how big or small your act is, the act should focus on “the realisation or restoration of dignity and empowerment”.
Various Mandela actions have been initiated by big businesses, NGOs, and even individuals – they are all a worthy cause and go a long way in keeping the legacy of a truly great man alive.
Here are a few things that you can do in the Durban area:
- The Daily News Milk Fund is on a “Feed a Baby” campaign to honour Madiba’s love and affection towards children. Just R67 provides milk to 35 babies and helps provide Future Life cereal to 40 pre-school children. You can contribute to the fund in two ways: 1) directly to Sushie Munsamy at Community Projects. - The Durban International Convention Centre will host the Durban leg of the “Million Meal Challenge” in association with Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa (an international NGO in SA). This initiative is aimed at eradicating hunger in SA. Over 6 000 volunteers in 3 cities in the country will be packaging one million meals in a single day – it will be a world first if accomplished. The nutritious, dehydrated meals of rice, soya, vegetables, and 21 essential vitamins and minerals, are easy to store and transport, have a shelf life of over a year and the cost per meal is only R2.75. The meal is packaged to feed 10 children or 6 adults comfortably. The packaged meals will be distributed in the months ahead to Early Childhood Development centres and schools affected by extreme poverty. With the support of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, the event will be hosted in Durban for the first time this year. The other two venues that have taken on the challenge are the Sandton Convention Centre and Canal Walk in Cape Town. - Spend the day with the children at Child Welfare Durban District. - Project Enza, an initiative by the ANB Group, aims at ensuring impoverished communities and underprivileged youth gain skills development in the workplace. One of its main missions is to help eradicate poverty, unemployment and joblessness in South Africa. Together with Tourism KZN, eThekwini Durban Business Unit, Durban Tourism, The Waterfront Hotel and The Office of The Premier, the project has invited 67 young people interested in pursuing careers in the hospitality industry to meet industry specialists on Saturday and gain a valuable understanding of the industry. - Gateway Theatre of Shopping is launching the “Gateway Gives Back” campaign this Saturday. It will run until September 12. Gateway is partnering with Rotary International Club to assist underprivileged schools in communities around the centre. Children at the village will have access to a library, computer room and educational recreation hall once the project is completed.
