“South Africanisms” set us apart from the rest of the world. They give us our uniqueness and are part of our South African identity and tradition. They make us proud of who we are and where we come from.

Think the bunny chow, Shisa Nyama and biltong (to name only a few). These culinary delights have come to define us in the rest of the world – South Africans own them. The same can be said for the Boerewors – a specially-filled sausage that is a staple in a variety of forms at any South African braai.

How the Boerewors first came about, I’m not sure – but what is evident is that this simple sausage has evolved over the years into something of a braai treat.

Supermarket chain, Shoprite and Checkers are proud of our boerewors tradition and celebrate it every year by hosting a Championship Boerewors competition.

With Heritage Day coming up on September, the championship is in full swing so that the winning Boerewors can be announced by September 16 and made available on store shelves by September 18.

This year over 650 recipes were tasted around the country by South African Chefs Association (SACA) judges, to find the top 18 boerewors recipes. The food experts judging the Top 18 Round were Martin Kobald (award winning chef and Honorary Life President of SACA), Carmen Niehaus (YOU and Huisgenoot Food Editor – for more than 25 years – and author of more than 25 cookbooks), Reuben Riffel (celebrity chef, 2004 Chef of the Year and owner of Reuben’s Restaurant, Bar & Deli and popular food consultant), Francois Ferreira (co-owner of the Francois Ferreira Food Academy), Jenny Morris (radio and TV presenter, author, celebrity chef, known as the “Giggling Gourmet”) and Thuli Gogela (food developer behind Mzansi Style Cuisine showcasing ancient culinary treasures from South Africa).

On Friday, the top three Boerewors “fundis” were announced in Cape Town at the Hop n Vine Festival. They are Phinah Maimela, 37, from Lydenburg in Mpumalanga, George Baloyi, 52, from Soshanguve in Gauteng and Ayanda Dyanse, 28, from Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape. One of them are in line for some fantastic prizes as well as the Championship Boerewors 2015 title.

This year, for the first time in the competition’s history, the finalists’ recipes can also be judged by the public. SMS and online voting will take place between August 28 and September 10. If you’re passionate about Boerewors, being a South African, or just enjoy good food – try out the top three recipes and vote for your favourite. And if that’s not incentive enough, a simple vote puts you in line to win R100 000 in prizes!
