Sunday read: Johannesburg
If you’re going to write about Johannesburg on the day Nelson Mandela died, it has to be pretty special or breathtaking. That’s my take on that day.
A nation’s heart broke on that day. It was a life-changing moment in South Africa, as much as the man’s release from prison was.
So, drawing on this day comes with a gravitas that is difficult to quantify. Johannesburg by Fiona Melrose is set in Houghton December 6, 2013.
Gin has returned from the US to throw a birthday party for her mother – a few blocks away from Madiba’s home. Former lovers, mining magnates, domestic workers, mothers and daughters.
The novel is populated with characters that live in this extraordinary city and make it what it is.
