Sunday read: A Kind of Freedom
I was eager to begin reading this novel.
Reading is an emotional journey for me. It is about testing my emotions, my empathy, and my understanding. For me, a book is gripping because it appeals to me emotionally, it tests me and it leaves me thinking about what I’ve read for a long time to come.
A Kind of Freedom is that kind of book. Margaret Wilkerson Sexton’s debut novel is mature and insightful. This is a family saga spanning 3 generations of a Creole family in New Orleans.
Love, addiction, racism, ambition and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina — this novel artfully knits these narratives together with compassion and grace.
